WONDER WOMAN SYNDROME

So many wonderful women have something called Wonder Woman Syndrome.  They feel that they can do it all.  They have immeasurable strength, stamina, and willpower.  Like Whitney Houston’s song “I’m Every Woman” says, “I’ll do it naturally because I’m every woman it’s all in me”.  Too many women feel that they can carry the load of the world on their shoulders, and they often do.  The arduous task of raising children, working full time, caring for ailing family members, being a loving partner/spouse, maintaining a home, and juggling a multitude of other chores and activities, women prove that they are tough heroes.  We are quick to take on all of the responsibilities that need to get done and add even more on our to-do list to help others.  The problem with having so many spinning plates to manage simultaneously is that women run the risk of overload.  It’s a matter of time before she begins to struggle to keep everything afloat, and things begin to sink.  Normally, she is the one who begins to sink.  Her health starts to falter.  Women must learn that it is OK not to be Wonder Woman or superhuman.  It’s OK to ask for help and accept it when it is offered to you.  Women must give themselves permission to say NO to others who ask them to take on more.  Setting healthy boundaries is vital to our mental, physical, and emotional states.

Sometimes when a woman begins to establish boundaries, she is faced with people who react with anger, disgust, and even guilt trips.  She should not allow the negative reactions of others to impact her well-being.  Once women establish clear boundaries and enforce those boundaries, then the other people have no choice but to adjust their behavior and reactions accordingly.  With time, women who’ve established their boundaries will receive respect.  People respect those who respect themselves.  So, if you discover that you are currently suffering from Wonder Woman syndrome, take a pause, evaluate all of the plates that you have spinning, and allow yourself to refuse to take on anymore until you free yourself from a few of your spinning plates.

From time to time, we need to set down the spinning plates and simply rest to recharge.  Be sure to take the bubble bath, get that massage, do those nails, tend to the hair, and most importantly listen to your inner voice.  It will tell you when it is overloaded and when it is ready to take on something new.  Listen.  Pause.  Listen some more.  Your inner voice has a whole lot to say, she just requires you to take the time to pause and listen.  Follow her guidance, give her daily love and respect, and she will repay you with a long healthy life.  That is the cure for Wonder Woman syndrome.
